Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage
As its name suggests, the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is a unique animal shelter, whose fame is not only known in Sri Lanka but worldwide as well. It i0s home to 94 elephants from 3 generations, and was actualized on the 16th of February 1975. It is the0 00world’s largest elephant nursery that holds the greatest number of captive elephants. The orphanage cares and protects for elephants that were unweaned in the wild and found wondering in forests of various parts of Sri Lanka.
The Entrance ticket to the Elephant Orphanage is 3000 LKR per adult and children from 3 to 12 years old get a 50% discount whereas for children under 3 years old. There are important rules to abide by as shown in the pic.
Sinharaja Forest Reserve
This evergreen rainforest Is located in the South-West of the island and is known to be one of the last virgin rainforests in the world left to date. It boasts of endemic and rare trees that hold 60% of the rainforest. It covers over 11000 hectares and is an ecological treasure with over 130 birds species which includes 33 species that are endemic to Sri Lanka and many trees, reptile, insect, amphibian and mammal species, some of which are even yet to be classified. Some of the more famous animals found in the forest are elephants, leopards, purple-faced langur, green pit viper, Sri Lanka Crested Dongo and green-billed coucal.
