Modes of Transport in the Island
Transport in the island of Sri Lanka is majorly depended on road network. A rail network does however, handle a portion of Sri Lanka’s transport needs. More so, there are navigable waterways and harbours. Sri Lanka has two international airport, one in Katunayake (35 kilometers north of Colombo) and the other in Hambantota. However, in practice, almost all airlines fly into Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake.
Roads account for 93% of land transport for Sri Lankans. There is no need to travel via sea or air to travel within the country as it is small in size. Public transport consists of mainly buses, three-wheelers (tuk-tuks), trains and private transport modes such as vans, lorries, motorbikes and cars.
Foreigners can also avail services of Uber and PickMe that are ride-hailing services, which include peer-to-peer ride sharing, food delivery (Uber-eats), freight transportation if required, ride hailing and even through a partnership with Lime that allows rental of electric bikes and motorized scooters.
They provide one of the smartest, fastest and safest ways to book cabs, taxis or other modes of transport. Both Uber and PickMe provide smart phone apps that can be used to avail their services and can be downloaded via Google Play and App Store.
